KALALUNGGAY TART, a concoction of Kalabasa and Malunggay made into a delicious tart by Helen De Guzman bested 7 other vegetable dishes in the first ever "Grand Gulay Cook-Off Challenge” by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) led by Secretary Joel Villanueva and the Department of Education (DepEd) headed by Secretary Armin Luistro. The two educational institutions partnered to promote Gulay and healthy canteen food in our basic education schools for our pupils. TESDA NCR Regional Director Mitzi Tangonan with her counterpart in DepEd NCR Dr. Ponciano Menguito organized the cook fest in the TESDA Women’s Center where Sec Joel, Sec Armin and TESDA Deputy Director General Irene Isaac served as judges in the food preparation. Serving as JUDGES OF TASTE were several pupils from different elementary schools in the National Capital Region as the winning recipe will be published in DepEd’s website and suggested to different school canteens in the country. Part of the challenge was to choose vegetables commonly found and cultivated in public schools such as Eggplant, Kangkong, Pechay, Okra, Sili, Upo, Mushrooms, Kamote, Kalabasa and Malunggay.

Helen of STI Paranaque, who took TESDA course Cookery NC II and used her skills in making pastries to help out her school finances, took the top prize while Milathel James Borja of TESDA Women’s Center and Heidi D. Reodica of the Center for Advanced Training in Food and Beverage Services bagged the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

“This cook fest is not only about giving elementary school children Go, Grow, and Glow food but also GIVING them opportunity to transform their lives, make their dreams come true, and move our beloved country forward.”
