Coca-Cola Asia Pacific Group President John Murphy visited the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) headquarters in Taguig City last October 12 to witness first-hand the fruits of the TESDA-Coke Sari-sari Store and Access to Resources (STAR) Program.

Together with Mr. Murphy were Coca-Cola ASEAN President for Business Iain McLaughlin, Coca-Cola FEMSA Asia Division President Fabricio Ponce, Coca-Cola Philippines President Diego Granizo, and Coca-Cola Philippines VP for Public Affairs and Communication Atty. Adel Tamano.

They were welcomed to TESDA by Deputy Director General Rebecca J. Calzado with Executive Director Luz Victoria Amponin of the Partnerships and Linkages Office, Assistant Director Sonia Lipio of the Certification Office, and TESDA Women’s Center Chief Maria Clara Ignacio.

During a round-table discussion, Coca-Cola and TESDA officials met with selected STAR Program women scholars who shared how the program greatly improved their lives after they had undergone the 12-week Basic Entrepreneurship and Gender Sensitivity Training.

The TESDA-Coke STAR Program aims to provide access to skills training, resources, and peer mentoring to 200,000 women sari-sari store and carinderia owners and operators all over the country by 2020.  It is part of the Coca-Cola Company's 5by20 Program which seeks to economically empower five million women globally within its value chain by 2020.

To date, the TESDA-Coke STAR Program has more than 48,000 graduates and has trained more than 376 trainers.
