The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Women's Center (TWC) rallied key industry players during a stakeholders forum at the Holiday Inn and Suites Makati to discuss increased economic participation for skilled women amidst the rapid developments in the automotive and land transport sector.
Standing in for Director General Isidro Lape?a, Deputy Director General for Policies and Planning, Rosanna Urdaneta highlighted the importance of the active involvement of the key industry players to expand and strengthen the Automotive Sector, as it is one of the identified priority sectors for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as stated in the National Technical Education and Skills Development Plan (NTESDP) 2018-2022.
The NTESDP envisions a “Vibrant Quality TVET for Decent Work and Inclusive Sustainable Growth."
"With the advancement of technology in the Automotive Sector, its strong employment generation potential and its share in the country’s GDP has a great deal to offer in terms of quality employment opportunities to many Filipinos that will contribute to the economic development of the country," Urdaneta said.
In addition to inclusive and sustainable growth, the forum emphasized on increasing the number of skilled women in the automotive industry - an area previously deemed non-traditional for women to be involved in, and addressing the skills requirements relevant to the companies' needs.
The automotive companies and key industry players gave their commitments to work and partner with the TWC on the areas of experience-based training, employment or job placement, curriculum development, and capacity building for trainers.
The participants also identified opportunities for women within the industry value chain.
Secretary Sid Lapeña conveyed his support for the event and commended the TWC for organising the forum. The TESDA chief has been stessing the importance of strong partnerships with various industries to "make our curriculum industry driven and to ensure facilitation of employment opportunities for our TVET graduates."
Philippine Commission on Women Chairperson and Center Advisory Council member Rhodora Bucoy stressed the significance of the key players' initiatives in engaging women in the production process within the automotive industry, and further commended the sector for making their workplaces more women-friendly.
According to Bucoy, there is a need for a policy that will ensure industrial peace, security and equity not just for women but for all. Also participating in the forum held June 6 are the representatives from Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc., CATs Motors, Inc., Centro Manufacturing Corp., Isuzu Philippines Corporation, Toyota Motor Philippines and Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc.
Also present were partners from several non-government organizations, the academe, as well as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
